English: from the medieval Spanish given name Íñigo, a vernacular derivative of IGNATIUS (SEE Ignatius), apparently the result of crossing with a name recorded in the Middle Ages as Ennecus. This is of uncertain, possibly Basque, origin. Íñigo is now rarely used as a given name in Spain. In the English-speaking world it is mainly associated with the architect and stage designer Inigo Jones (1573–1652). The name had previously been borne by his father, a London clothmaker, who may well have received it at around the time of Queen Mary's marriage to Philip of Spain, when Spanish ways and Spanish names were fashionable, especially among devout Roman Catholics. The architect passed it on to his son, but later occurrences are rare.
